Hear Me Speak

I enjoy teaching and public speaking and do as much of it as I can. Here's a selection of presentations and media appearances that you might enjoy.

Eroticism & Anal Sexuality
"Love, Lust & Laughter" with Dr. Diana Wiley, Progressive Radio Network
Recorded May 27, 2011  show length: 1 hr.

Diana Wiley uses her unique show to talk with guests in depth who might otherwise be heard only in snipets. We spend the first half of this show discussing some key aspects of eroticism, including how it differs from sex, and how eros involves deep urges to heal the very issues that have been most difficult for us. The second half of the show is devoted to the pleasure potentials of anal stimulation, and how we can enjoy these pleasures safely and with deep self-awareness.

Erotic Integrity

"Six on Sex" radio show hosted by sexologist Dr. Claudia Six
KUSF FM and podcast
recorded August 15, 2008  show length: 28:23

Dr. Six hosts one of the most unique radio shows I know of. Every show has the same important subject—Erotic Integrity. Each week a different guest tackles the question of what erotic integrity means to them and how it shows up  in their work. When Claudia asked me to appear back in 2008, I jumped at the chance. Doing the show really made me think. Perhaps it will have the same effect on you.

How Eros Heals
Plenary presentation the "Sexual Healing" conference
Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, Western Region
Video of PowerPoint plus audio recorded April 12, 2008  show length: 58 minutes
In this talk I give an overview of research on the healing properties of pleasure. Based on findings and theories from my own eroticism research, I make the case that all turn-ons, no matter how problematic they appear, have embedded within them an urge to heal conflicts and unfinished emotional business from childhood and adolescence. I conclude with a detailed case example.

Forum with Michael Krasney
Radio appearance on KQED FM, March 12, 1996  show length: 22 minutes
Shortly after the publication of The Erotic Mind, I was thrilled to appear on Michael Krasney's show. His morning talk-fest on San Francisco public radio is hugely popular here, and for good reason. He presides over intelligent, substantive discussions with interesting guests who have something to say, and his call-in audience is bright and engaged. After my appearance, I was amazed at how many people had heard it.

The Howard Stern Show
Radio appearance on July 1, 1998  show length: 10 minutes
When the 3rd Edition of Anal Pleasure and Health was published in 1998, I had a blast of morning talk-show radio appearances, including the Howard Stern Show. Of course, he was silly and irreverant, but also took the subject "seriously"—notice the non-stop fart sounds in the background. I was on after a young woman, "Anal Darling," who specialized in anal sex porn videos. She stayed on during my segment. I was a little embarassed to be on the show, but afterwards I was stunned to discover how many smart, feminist women I know are fans of Howard. Book sales also soared for about a week.
